Support for an `effective congresswoman'
We are writing to express our support for U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. We are Holocaust survivors who are involved in several community and survivor-group activities. Ros-Lehtinen has been an effective representative for all of her constituents, regardless of their party, race or social class.
She petitioned President Bush to demand that the government apologize and make proper restitution to the Hungarian Holocaust survivors for its actions in the Gold Train affair, and the White House finally responded to litigation with a fair settlement.
Although it was a mistake for Ros-Lehtinen to say what she did about assassinating Fidel Castro, it is easy to understand why she and others want Castro gone from the scene. He killed and imprisoned thousands of innocent people, and he has repressed the Cuban people who cannot live or speak freely.
We understand ruthless dictators. If Hitler had been killed before he started World War II, think of the suffering that would have been avoided.
Ros-Lehtinen's comments should not be allowed to undermine her outstanding record of service.
