In the Keynoter...
EDITOR:
During the 2006 holiday season, thousands of gift parcels were sent to various destinations throughout the Florida Keys. To ensure timely delivery of these items, postal clerk Jack Baldwin and his colleagues at the Key West post office worked extended hours during the week and on holidays. I would like to thank him and his fellow postal workers for their tremendous service and dedication to our Keys community.
Yet despite such outstanding service, customers often face long lines and extended wait times due to serious staffing shortages. The current staffing formula is a result of an assessment of the Key West post office conducted by Postal Service administrators in August. The results of this assessment are grossly inaccurate, as they fail to consider the fluctuating population in the Keys due to tourists and seasonal residents.I have repeatedly called upon the Postal Service to conduct its staff assessments during seasonally appropriate times, such as the high-season months of December and January.
As your elected representative in Congress, I will continue to work closely with individuals such as Jack Baldwin, along with various local and federal officials, to ensure the Key West post office is spared from additional staff cuts. It is imperative that it receives the funding it requires, the staff it needs and the recognition for outstanding service it deserves.
